Thursday 7th December ARRRGGGHHH They're all out to get me...
When the idea of the website became a reality (all down to Simon my Technical and Tactical Guru) I vowed I would share all my adventures, mishaps and Maireeisms. With that in mind I will share the following with you fortunatly I have the ability to laugh at myself...Lots.
Last night everything in camp had made a vow to get me Im sure. I've decided I don't like the Light Saber bug things. They whizz round at 20,000mph and you cant work out what they are. I presume they hoover up other smaller bugs but Im not sure because Ive not properly seen one yet.
Well one of them decided to investigate the back of the fridge and set itself on fire. There was a big WHOOSH followed by a few "mayday mayday" buzzes then an awful stink. So I'm guessing it won't do that again. I'm quite glad that it didnt fly back out again once it had caught fire though. Anyway convinced it was going to have blown the flame out or have broken the fridge in some way I decided to go to the loo before bed. Even though Im the only one in camp Im still closing the door, after checking for spiders and the such I was just about to place bottom on seat when an almighty croak came out the depths of the loo, which sent me flying forward hitting my head on the door eventually getting out the door and peering into the loo, only to find a very sweet tree frog blinking back at me. Well I can understand its protest no frog and the majority of people wouldnt like to see a sight like that heading towards them!! I did a good job banging my head though theres a lump there which may take some explaining.
Also just before dusk Claudio came with some Mangos and told me to bring camera. Theres an area up by the station where there is about 10 - 12 lemon trees growing and sat very quietly was a toco. He flew to another tree raided a nest there then got mobbed and flew off shouting all about it. At the time I had just sat down from cleaning the camp. Thursday and Friday are cleaning days at the aviary so not wanting to get too out of routine I swept the ground floor and first floor did washing cleaned the shower area etc etc ( at least half of A block) So I have another Toco pic but then camera battery died. Today has a very English feel very wet and cool so off to the capi area office work capi area then ebio then capi area! Oh yeah the zoo in Sao Paulo have answered and have said yes to 10 days of work experience so from the 6th -16th Jan I will be at Sorocabo zoo. Back to the floor and being the "go for". It's been about 11 years since I was a proper work experience not just shadowing as a keeper so hopefully I will be some use this time round.
Another talk tonight and true to from more visitors to the castle. Another 2. Talks are mis timed though you come back from one of the trails then everyone has tea then its time for the talk in the bar and most people are quite tired by then. The more I do the easier it gets but theres so much to remember Churchill Trust, Castle,Project and now Yacutinga want me to tell people about the station and how their money helps by providing facilites for me to use which I have no problem doing its just a bit off putting with people yawning at you! Tonights crowd were very interested and posing some quite technical questions some of which showed that they had been listening to the guides talks aswell. It then turns out that the one lady had retired from being a biomedical lab technician earlier in the year and the husband was science based aswell. That'll be why then! So more people who will be joining in on the online adventure so far there will be people from New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Central America and France and the Netherlands aswell as everyone who started the journey. I feel a bit like a cross between Dave Gormans adventure and the fraggle who used to send postcards back to fraggle rock!!
